When you started your online business, list building was probably the last thing on your mind, but you inveriably had a list of people or organizations that you knew would be interested in your product or service. This list of contacts morphs into its own living, breathing organism, referred to in cyber-business as “THE LIST”. Yes, it’s all caps, because even newbies in cyber-business know the importance of THE LIST.
Email opt-in lists build THE LIST. You have seen an opt-in page before, with a security statement at the bottom that assures you that your email address will not be sold or rented to anyone else. So, you fill in your email address to get whatever free report/product/service is provided at the site.
As an internet business person building email opt in lists for your long term sustainability is a no brainer. To do this you will want to develop your own email opt-in box. You’ll place this on all of your sites landing pages, preferably above the fold..
Beware of buying email lists built by someone else’s opt-in page. While some companies have great success with this list building method, it can also get you in a lot of trouble.
If you decide to buy an email list, make sure, first, that it’s an opt-in, or even double opt-in list and not one collected by spam robots. The people who build these lists will sell them to you, and then you’re the one who is accused of hacking into someone’s account and spamming them.
As a heads-up—if an email list is responsive and is monetizing the owner’s website, he’s probably not going to sell it. As you find when you build your LIST, each of these people are real, and you’ll start developing relationships with them. You won’t want to jeopardize your relationship with these people by selling them to someone else, so most reputable business owners won’t sell to you.
